How long does the therapy last?
There is no standard duration as each case is unique. Studies indicate that they usually last between two months and two years, but in no case is the therapy intended to last a lifetime.
What is Therapy?
- Evaluation: this is the first and most important step, it usually corresponds to the first two sessions. It is essential since it is when enough information is collected to make the corresponding functional analysis on the person’s situation and to know the behaviors that are maintaining the problem and discomfort. In the second session, the patient is presented with the hypothesis and the intervention route to be taken, so that he understands and is an active participant in the change process.
- Treatment: This section could be considered as the “therapy” itself. Once the objectives have been established in the previous step, we will now proceed to work on those objectives through the guidelines and techniques adapted to the person and designed to achieve them. The objective of the treatment is not only to eliminate the discomfort reason for consultation, but to provide the person with the necessary tools to face other possible difficulties in the future.
- Follow-up: during this stage the sessions are spaced out in time and are dedicated to maintaining the changes achieved in therapy and preventing relapses.
When this last step is achieved the therapy reaches its end.
